The Future and Past of Cloud Computing

2016 was a great year for the cloud industry as the top three companies - Amazon , Microsoft  and IBM combined - raced past $30 billion dollars in annual revenues from their respective cloud services. Quarterly revenues for all these top cloud service providers have grown in strong double-digit rates in the last four quarters, often crossing the 50% year-over-year growth levels. To put that number in perspective, let’s take a closer look at the most recent quarterly cloud revenue numbers provided by the top three providers.

Amazon Web Services reported sales of $3.231 billion during the third quarter of 2016 compared to $2.05 billion a year earlier, a growth of 57.5%. Microsoft’s annualized cloud revenue run rate exceeded $13 billion during the first quarter 2017 compared to $8.2 billion a year earlier, a growth of 58.5%. IBM’s cloud as-a-service segment annual run rate reached $7.5 billion during the third quarter of 2016, a growth of 65% compared to last year.

That kind of growth coupled with multi-billion-dollar revenues is impressive, to say the least. What this clearly shows is the high demand for cloud solutions. Microsoft Azure, for example, has posted in excess of 100% growth over the past four quarters, and there is no indication of a slowdown in growth or revenues.

All three companies have firmly established themselves in the cloud market, and their revenue growth is a huge validation to the products that they have in hand. Amazon remains the lead player when it comes to the Infrastructure-as-a-Service segment, and the company keeps adding service after service to its list, while at the same time driving prices lower.

Microsoft now has a solid presence in the Software-as-a-Service segment, thanks to its business productivity suite led by strong double-digit growth in Office 365 adoption. During the first quarter of 2017, Office 365 commercial revenue grew by 54% in constant currency as Microsoft’s Office Consumer subscription base reached 24 million, up from 18.2 million a year ago. As more and more businesses use their SaaS products, it will fuel the growth of its IaaS offering as well.

IBM has clearly carved out its niche position within the cloud market, and its Analytics unit is already near $5 billion in quarterly revenues. No other company in the world makes that much money from analytics-driven products, and this goes to show that the company has found enterprise level takers for its Watson-powered unit. On the cloud deployment front, IBM has kept its focus on the hybrid cloud segment and that decision will pay off in the long run.

These are the three companies to watch over the next several years as cloud deployment grows around the world. For IBM and Microsoft, which are older companies than Amazon, cloud-based services are their second chance to reach the top of their industry segments. They were there before, but they now need cloud to take them there once again.

Though Oracle and Alphabet have entered the cloud race, they were both extremely late. The top three have a huge lead over them and have carved out their own niches within the cloud segment. As for Oracle and Alphabet, 2017 will be a make or break year in terms of cloud revenues because, if they allow the top three any more room, they will quickly run away with the market share. This is a critical period when most enterprise companies will be choosing their preferred cloud vendors, and if Alphabet and Oracle don’t feature as viable contenders, they are sure to lose in the long run.

Samsung Galaxy S8: This could be our first proper look at the Galaxy S8, Leaked

Over the course of the past few months, we’ve heard an awful lot about Samsung’s much-anticipated upcoming flagship smartphone of 2017, the Galaxy S8  and now it looks like we may be getting our first proper glimpse at the design of the device, thanks to a leaked photograph that surfaced on Chinese social networking website Weibo earlier today,

Galaxy s8 leaked
As you can see in the image left, the most noticeable difference between the purported Galaxy S8 and its predecessor is the omission of the physical home button and capacitive navigation keys. What’s strange, however, is that there don’t appear to be any on-screen buttons, either. Typically, when you head into Settings, they don’t automatically hide so we’re left wondering whether the photo is a product of some Photoshop wizardry.

There could be a simple explanation for the lack of buttons, though. It’s perfectly feasible that Samsung could have developed a full-screen mode, which can be manually activated to take advantage of the entire display. If this (or a similar feature) turns out to exist, then it’s likely that they keys would only appear when a user swipes up from the bottom of the screen. This is, of course, nothing but speculation on our part.

If it wasn’t for this major discrepancy, we’d feel pretty confident in saying that this picture is the real deal. Earlier this week, we heard from our insiders that by doing away with the front-facing buttons, Samsung was able to shrink the width of the top and bottom bezels on the handset by as much as 30 percent. Although, we have to say, it doesn’t look great; mainly because the bottom bezel is thinner than the top (another discrepancy).

Unfortunately, as with all leaks, we have to take this alleged design with a pinch of salt until Samsung provides us with some evidence with regards to what it has in store for its next flagship, and if the latest rumors are anything to go by it looks like we may have to wait until April 18 to find out more. There is some good news, though. As we approach its release date, the frequency of leaks should increase — so there’s a good chance we’ll see more of the device in the coming weeks.

Back Up Your iTunes Collection or Your Whole Computer

You can manually back up your iTunes content by dragging a copy of its folder to an external drive or server. Before you do, make sure everything in your library is inside your iTunes Media folder. Open iTunes, go in to the File menu, choose Library and then Organize Library. Select the “Consolidate files” option and click the O.K. button when finished. (Depending on your library, you may also see a Consolidate files option directly on the Library sub-menu.)

Back Up Your iTunes Collection
Use “Consolidate files” command to gather copies of all the files you play through iTunes and put them inside the main iTunes Media folder for transfer to a backup site. Credit The New York Times When you have your external driver or server connected to the computer, open Music folder within your Windows user folder, or the Music folder inside your Mac’s Home folder. Find the iTunes folder within and copy it to your backup destination. Repeat the steps whenever you want to make a fresh copy of the backup.

If you do not want the responsibility of remembering to manually save a copy of the folder, an automated backup system can easily preserve your iTunes library — as well the other files on your computer. Microsoft includes File Recovery software with Windows 10 (or Backup and Restore if the computer is running Windows 7), while Apple’s Mac operating system has come with the Time Machine program for backup since 2007.

For those who want more than the basic built-in backup software, third-party programs like Acronis True Image (for Windows and Mac, as well as Android and iOS) or Carbon Copy Cloner (for Mac) can grab a backup of the entire computer.

Along with software, you need a place to put those backed-up files, typically an external hard drive or network server. Some programs (like Acronis True Image) also back up your files to a cloud-storage server, but you can also just use an online backup service. The Wirecutter site (owned by The Times) recommends CrashPlan, but also has suggestions for external hard drives if you prefer to keep your backup plan on the ground.

Adobe Photoshop 7.0, although a bit older version but there are solid reasons to choose 7.0 over advanced series. Simplicity and quick tools to draw your desired sketch lines and shades which were never so easy. Speedy work is what users ever wanted and 7.0 Package is probably the most comprehensive initiative for professional editing tools. Adobe Users are pretty much addicted to Adobe Photoshop 7.0 version because its easy to load images and editing is just on few clicks away. So quickness in operation is what makes 7.0 version different but still a preferable choice for graphic editors.

Facebook celebrates 2016 by showing off its best hackathon-developed products

facebook 1 hacke way 640x0

2016 was a year of innovation for Facebook, and to celebrate, the company has named some of its favorite projects and products that came from its hackathons at its offices around the world during the year.

Among the items on the list are a richer and more detailed Safety Check, “adaptive attachments,” and instant verification for Android - all in all, Facebook’s 2016 was a pretty productive one.

Perhaps the coolest feature developed during the year is Instant Verification on Android, which works through Facebook’s Account Kit. In days past, to verify an app, that app would have had to send you a verification code via SMS, after which you would need to check that code and enter it into the Facebook app. The new feature allows other apps to use Facebook data to verify a phone number, getting rid of the extra SMS steps.

Next up is a better, richer Safety Check. Safety Check was itself developed at a hackathon, but the new version makes it even easier for people to tell friends and family that they’re safe in an emergency. How does it do that? Well, it basically enables extra context through images and calls to action, which can be embedded within notifications. Another extra module within Safety Check allows users to get access to information like where to find shelter, food, water, and even first aid.

Last but not least are “adaptive attachments,” an innovation created at a hackathon in New York, which basically gives users a new way to upload photos to shared albums, create a crowdsourced video, and even play multiplayer games, all only by commenting on a post.

Of course, hackathons aren’t unique to 2016, so we can expect some more innovative products to come from hackathons in 2017, too.
